Threads Interrupted - Twisted log cabin blocks and a raw edge woven wavy strip block made with more than 90 individually sewn contrasting red Ankara and black cotton print fabric pieces. Interrupted pattern designs involve the deliberate disruption or break in a regular, repeating motif. By breaking the expected flow, interrupted patterns evoke a sense of movement, surprise, or asymmetry. The sweeping black arcs interrupt the energetic flow of the patterned cloth, creating spaces of stillness and reflection. Threads Interrupted endeavors to recognize the blood and the land of Black people in the diaspora and how our cultural legacy continues to be interrupted....Black here is not emptiness; it is weight, memory, and depth.
At the center, a woven grid is presented as structure, discipline, and architecture recalling handwoven textiles and the mathematics of survival: counting, aligning, making do and the quiet labor of repair. The interruptions in pattern echo forced breaks in lineage, language, and geography. Stitching plays a crucial role in Threads Interrupted, holding dissimilar elements together without pretending the breaks never happened. This wallhanging speaks to resilience. It recognizes that lives, like textiles, are shaped by what interrupts them, loss, change, and injustice, but also by how those interruptions are met.
