Shards and Stripes is a reflection on fragmentation, rhythm, and repair. The composition is built from angular shards and insistent stripes, creating a surface alive with tension and movement. Nothing here is lifeless.
The shards evoke histories interrupted, stories cut short, and identities shaped by forces beyond individual control. These fragments could have been discarded but instead are carefully placed, stitched, and held in relationship to one another. In quilting, broken pieces are never merely remnants; they are raw material for transformation.
Color plays a critical role in shaping the emotional tone of the piece drawing from African diasporic color traditions, where color is never neutral. Precision exists here, but it is not rigid. This intentional irregularity honors human hands and human histories, both imperfect and powerful. Through cloth and stitch, the work asserts that even in brokenness, there is pattern, and within pattern, the possibility of renewal.
