Sew Indigo is an exploration of depth, repetition, and ancestral memory expressed through the enduring language of blue. The hand of the maker is present in every seam, reminding us that this work is not mass-produced but carefully assembled, piece by piece.

The composition is structured around interlocking diamonds with rhythmic geometry that suggests both protection and passage, echoing textile traditions across the African diaspora where pattern functions as mapping, encoding, and storytelling. The surface quilting adds another layer of quiet movement, softening the sharp geometry and inviting touch. These stitched lines function like breath—steady, grounding, and human. They slow the viewer down, encouraging close looking and reflection.

Indigo, one of the oldest dyes known to humanity, carries with it a layered history of labor, trade, resistance, and beauty. In this quilted wallhanging, blue is not a single note but a chorus—ranging from deep midnight tones to softened sky hues—each shade holding its own emotional weight.  Indigo holds profound symbolic meaning. Historically cultivated and processed through intense labor, indigo dye connects this quilt to stories of enslavement, survival, and cultural continuity. Ankara Blue string quilt with free motion machine quilting. Ready to hang Approx 60" x 31"

  • Indigo is also associated with protection, spirituality, and healing. In Sew Indigo, the color becomes an act of reclamation—transforming a legacy of exploitation into one of intentional beauty and agency. To “sew indigo” is to stitch history back together, to claim what was extracted and reshape it through creative control and that blue, in all its depth, remains a powerful vessel for telling our stories.(https://www.adireafricantextiles.com/textiles-resources-sub-saharan-africa/some-major-west-african-textile-traditions/indigo-in-west-africa ) Unfortunately nowadays most  blue shades, especially denims, are commercially dyed but the story of indigo is one worth knowing.
