Nkyinkyim is a quilted wall hanging-the Adinkra symbol that means twisting and depicts the tortuous nature of life's journey. These twists and turns require one to be versatile and resilient to survive. The symbol represents transformation, adaptability, and the ability to turn in multiple directions without losing one’s core. This piece reflects the ongoing evolution of Black life and creative practice-transformation not as rupture, but as continuity through change.
The stacked, shifting geometry embodies the essence of Nkyinkyim: the wisdom to bend, pivot, and reconfigure in response to changing circumstances. Hand created of 100% Cotton and Bogolanfini (Mudcloth). Beneath the Nkyinkyim symbol lies barkcloth, a material with deep historical and cultural resonance across parts of Africa, particularly in Central and East Africa. Made from the inner bark of the fig tree and softened through repeated beating, barkcloth is one of the oldest known textiles, embodying sustainability, patience, and intimate knowledge of the land.
Nkyinkyim also functions as a meditation on Black resilience. Historically, Black communities have been required to adapt constantly to shifting landscapes, systems, and definitions imposed from outside. The quilt does not apologize for its complexity; it celebrates it. Approx 28" x 31" Ready to Hang
