16 Ankara squares with free motion and straight machine stitching Olive parachute cloth and printed kente blocked backing. Genesis was inspired by the Biblical story of creation, a narrative that begins not with certainty, but with spirit hovering over chaos. “In the beginning,” light is called forth, waters are separated, land emerges, and life unfolds in stages. That rhythm of ordering, dividing, and bringing forth deeply informs this quilted wall hanging. Rather than illustrating the story literally, the quilt interprets it through process, pattern, and cloth.

The surface of Genesis is intentionally dense and active, echoing the fullness of creation. Diagonal blocks push and pull against one another, suggesting movement from formlessness toward structure. This visual energy recalls the early verses of Scripture, where elements are named and placed, not all at once, but day by day. Each block becomes a moment of becoming, distinct yet inseparable from the whole.

Genesis ultimately invites contemplation of beginnings—biblical, ancestral, and personal. It asks how we participate in ongoing creation through what we make, repair, and carry forward. Like the first chapter of the Bible, the quilt does not close the story; it opens it, setting the stage for all that follows. The quilt was created through reflection on a sermon by Pastor Reginald Van Stephens entitled “A New Creation” Jan 2024. Approx 58” x 58”
